Kenya: Kids Alive Nyando Children's Home

KENYA HOME

Nyando Children's Home Dining Hall

LOCATION

The Nyando Home is located in the Nyanza province, west of Kenya. It sits close to the Lake Victoria, which is shared among the 3 neighboring East African countries, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

BACKGROUND

The Luo tribe is the predominant group in Western Kenya and fishing the primary means of earning a living. Various cultural practices have made the spread of HIV/AIDS rampant in western Kenya, particularly the ingrained culture of wife inheritance and polygamy.

Hundreds of villages have been wiped out as entire families are impacted by HIV/AIDS. Aggressive strategies have helped reduce the transmission rates in this part of the country but a lot more still needs to be done. This provides Kids Alive Kenya with opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve, and their communities.

The Kids Alive Nyando Children’s Home was opened in the year 2004 through the support of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. The Home was established in partnership with the Nyando CEA Church in order to reach out to needy children in the communities in the Nyando area.

PROGRAMS

The Nyando Home provides residential care for orphans and vulnerable children aged between 4-to-12 years old. The children attend the nearby local schools and participate actively in the local Church.
