Doug and Sara Johnson and their family became better acquainted with Kids Alive International in 2000 when Doug volunteered his construction skills to help with the USA office expansion. A year later, the entire family was heading to Guatemala to serve as long-term missionaries.

Why would a growing family leave the comforts of their home to live in a third-world country? Doug offers, “I love kids, and they are often helpless victims. There's a great need in Guatemala.” Similarly, Sara shares, “I love children, too, and God's Word tells us He wants us to look after orphans and widows in their distress.”

A graduate in Christian Education from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, previous to coming to Kids Alive, Doug provided construction support and supervision to (Helps) International Ministries. Sara also attended Moody Bible, is a Licensed Practical Nurse, and worked as a crisis pregnancy counselor (among a variety of other voluntary positions) .

On the field, Doug heads up the Construction-Maintenance of the childrens homes and other facilities while Sara works as the sponsorship facilitator (and team coordinator). Doug and Sara are blessed with five childrenScott, Emily, Bryan, Neal, and Jared.
