Peru: Manchay Care Center

LOCATION
Manchay, Peru is a mountainous area in the coastal desert just outside of the capital city of Lima. It is an area of extreme poverty with no running water, no sewage system, and little electricity.

HISTORY
The Manchay Care Center opened in May 2003 to respond to the need of mothers needing a safe place to leave their children while working, so as not to put them in a children’s home.

FACILITIES

The present rented facilities for the Care Center are housed in the local Baptist church. The two rooms, (15’ x 30’), large soccer court (where the kids ride bikes and play), kitchen, bathroom with shower, and the swing sets provide adequate facilities for the 11 children being cared for.

PROGRAM

Currently, we serve 11 children, from 7:00 a.m., to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Care for the children includes basic hygiene needs, clothing, nutritious meals, health care, educational preparation and spiritual development. Twice a month, the mothers join their children for a family-style meal. After the meal, they receive training in parenting skills and attend a Bible study.

FUTURE

The present facilities can hold 20-25 children. We will continue to increase the number of children in the Care Center as more people become sponsors.

Our goal is to add an after-school program for our 4-year-olds when they reach Kindergarten age. This program would include a safe place to be, tutoring, a nutritious meal and Bible study.

As funding becomes available, we would like to open another site in a different location of Manchay.
