Summer Intern Job Descriptions (6-10 weeks commitment):  

  • Dominican Republic: Summer Programming Intern

Commitment: 

Date of Need:  June 18 – August 2, 2007

Description:   Summer Interns will work with children at risk in our various ministry sites for the summer.  Programming interns generally teach groups of children between 5 and 15 in size in disciplines such as English and math as well as lead devotionals and other spiritually enhancing activities.     

Qualifications:   Desire to work with at risk children.   At least one year of college is preferred.   At least a basic level of Spanish language (more than two years of high school Spanish).  Teaching experience or theory is also desirable.

  • Haiti: Tutor and Afternoon Program Supervisor

            Commitment:  6 months

            Position Available: As early as January 2005

Description: The intern would assist the teacher in a multi-grade classroom by supervising students who are working on their own while the teacher teaches others. The intern would assist the missionaries in preparing curriculum for the Haitian teacher.  The intern would also be in charge of an afternoon English as a second language program.

Qualifications: An education background is a must. A working knowledge of the French and / or Creole language would be a great asset. The intern must be willing to have living accommodations in the home of another KAI missionary family.

Short-term Missionary Job Descriptions (7 month-2 year commitment):  

  • Dominican Republic, Jarabacoa: Short-term Construction Manager

Commitment: 2 years 

Date of Need: Immediate

Description:   Responsibility will be to oversee construction and maintenance projects and work with visiting service teams. Our construction coordinator, direct projects, complete some maintenance tasks on their own, and direct the efforts of work teams when they are here (approx 20 weeks per year). Our missionaries often work along side Dominican nationals. Work teams are generally 15-20 persons in size and age in range from high school age to adults.

Qualifications:   Spanish language or willingness to learn the languagel. Basic maintenance skills or a mechanical aptitude. Willingness to live in a cross-cultural environment. College education preferred.

  • Dominican Republic: Short-term trainer, researcher and analyst

Commitment: 2 years

Date of Need: Immediate

Description:   We seek a North American or Dominican missionary to analyze and document best practices and lead training of our Dominican staff.    In fulfilling our strategic plan, we seek to analyze our current practices and study other practices to ensure our programming efforts in ministry are world class.   We want to develop documentation and training manuals that help in the development of future workers at our orphanages and day programs.   Areas of focus would include educational development programs, discipline approaches, child protection, vocational training, and more.  

Qualifications:   Fluent Spanish language.  College degree.   Experience or documented interest in understanding children at risk.   Experience with research and analysis preferred.

  • Guatemala: Construction Coordinator for Zapote

Commitment: 2 years

Date of Need: January 2007

Description:  The missionary will help oversee site maintenance and construction. The person in this position will work side by side with the facilities director in infrastructure development, building design, construction finances and budgeting, materials acquisition, contractor solicitation, work team supervision, supervision of national construction staff, and site security.

Qualifications: The person in this position is expected to attain competency in Spanish, though not necessarily fluency. General construction awareness and ability to learn construction techniques are required. Problem solving skills are a must as often the ordinary means for accomplishing tasks are not available. Financial competency is necessary to administer the construction budget responsibly. Working with teams and in a culture not one’s own demands much flexibility and patience. The construction coordinator is responsible in a large part for work team experience. Therefore, the ability to interact with team members from diverse backgrounds is essential.

  • Guatemala: Service Team Coordinator

Commitment: 2 years

Date of Need: March 2006

Description:  The Service Team Coordinator (STC) is responsible for the recruitment, coordination, preparation, hosting and follow up care of the construction teams that come to work at The Oasis Children’s Home in San Lucas, Guatemala

Qualifications: The STC needs to be fluent in Spanish (12 weeks of language school) and have a broad knowledge base of the Guatemalan culture. They should be well-organized, possess excellent and have effective communication skills; have the ability to develop relationships with the national and international staff, accurately manage team finances, be flexible and have a willingness to educate teams on the culture of Guatemala.

  • Haiti: Construction Supervisor

Commitment: 2 years or long term

Date of Need: Immediate

Description:  This individual would oversee the construction of houses and a school at the Kids Alive Haiti ministry site in Balan. He would be required to work with teams and with Haitian workers.  He would be involved in planning the different stages of the work and scheduling volunteer work teams.

Qualifications: This person would need to be knowledgeable in concrete and concrete block construction and have understanding of electrical and plumbing installation. Some ability in the French language would be an asset. Past experience in supervising a construction crew would be necessary as well, someone who is flexible and can improvise when culture and material supply demand it.

  • Haiti: School Administrator/Teacher Trainer

Commitment: 2 years or long term

Date of Need: Immediate

Description: This individual would oversee the development of a Kids Alive Haiti school, which presently has eleven students and one teacher. He or she would be involved in the choosing and training of teachers for a school that will eventually have up to 200 students.

Qualifications: Extensive experience in education with a vision for Christ-centered education is a must. Some administrative experience is highly

  • Lebanon: Children’s Youth Worker

Commitment: 7 months or long term (2 years preferred)

Date of Need: Immediate

Description: The main responsibilities of a Children’s Youth Worker are:

  •  To assist in organizing activities (sports crafts, visits, etc) for the children, especially in the afternoons and at weekends;
  • To be available for children to talk through any problems or issues affecting or worrying them;
  •  To assist with helping a group of older children with their school homework on a regular basis;
  • To lead Discipleship groups and/or Bible clubs for groups of children, and encouraging individual children by reading the Bible and praying with them.

Qualifications: Previous experience in working with children would be an asset. Applicants should be willing to work as part of a team, have good organizational skills, be flexible and patient, and be good communicators with children and adults.

  • Lebanon: School Class Teacher/Teacher Assistant

Commitment: Minimum of one school year

Date of Need: Immediate

Description: The main responsibilities of a Class Teacher are:

  • To contribute positively towards our aim to be a caring community that reflects the love of God.
  • To take day-to-day responsibility for the academic progress of a class of children, and strive to enable each child to achieve to the best of his ability.
  • To help provide a broad, balanced curriculum, in accordance with the school's curriculum plan.
  • To be aware of the specific educational, emotional, and behavioral problems of individual children, and assist in the development of Individual Education Plans where appropriate.
  • To help maintain a high standard of discipline, both in the classroom and in the school as a whole.
  • To produce displays of children’s work, and generally help create an attractive learning environment for the children.
  • To keep appropriate records of children’s progress, as outlined in the school's assessment policy.
  • To undertake reasonable additional responsibilities, under the direction of the School Principal.

It is the job of Teaching Assistants to help the Class Teacher in the delivery of the curriculum, and provide one-to-one support to children who have particular learning difficulties.

Qualifications: A teaching qualification is desirable for Class Teachers, though not essential, especially for Assistants. All applicants should be willing to work as part of a team, be energetic, flexible, and have lots of patience!

  • Lebanon:  Deputy Head Teacher

Commitment: 2 years, but with the possibility of career status

Date of Need: Starting September, 2006

Description: The Deputy Head Teacher is responsible to the Director and assists in overseeing the day-to-day running of the School Program.  The Deputy Head Teacher will have the responsibility of teaching a class of elementary aged children.  Subjects to be taught include English, Mathematics, Science, Bible, Geography and History. 

In addition, the Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher with:

  • Ensuring that a broad, balanced curriculum is delivered throughout the school in accordance with the Lebanese National Curriculum and the School Teaching Program;
  • Ensuring that school timetables and schedules are kept up-to-date;
  • Ensuring that the educational needs of individual children are being met throughout the school;
  • Overseeing that appropriate records of children’s progress are kept throughout the school;
  • Contributing to the spiritual aims and ethos of Kids Alive Lebanon.  This will include participating in prayer meetings, worship evenings, and other spiritual activities;
  • Overseeing the Staff Development program for school staff;
  • Assisting in managing the School Budget and Finances;
  • Ensuring that appropriate career education is provided in the school;
  • Ensuring positive relationships are maintained with parents and other Kids Alive Lebanon staff;
  • Ensuring that the school building is maintained effectively;
  • Assisting in the development of the school’s strategic goals;
  • Building positive links between the school and other KAL programs.

The successful candidate will be offered this position with a view to            him/her becoming Head Teacher in June 2007.

  • Teaching Qualification essential
  • A love for children and lots of energy

  • Lebanon: Nursery Worker

Commitment: 7 months or long term (2 years preferred)

Date of Need: Immediate

Description: The Nursery Worker will assist with providing care for our pre-school children (one to four years) who attend our Day-Care program. They will be involved in with preparing and leading activities for the children, playing with them, and other aspects of their care.

Qualifications: Previous experience in working with children would be an asset. Applicants should be willing to work as part of a team, have good organizational skills, be flexible and patient, and be good communicators with children and adults.
