Sudan: Good Shepherd Care Center - Wau
SUDAN HOME

LOCATION

Sudan is the largest country in Africa – more than 967,499 sq miles (2.5 million square kilometers) in size – and ranges from vast expanses of desert in the north to regions of tropical forest in the south of the country. It is bordered by no less than nine other countries - Egypt, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea. The capital city of Khartoum is home to 5.7 million people, about 6.7% of the total population, estimated to be about 38 million people.

HISTORY

The Good Shepherd Care Center was opened by Kids Alive in January 2006.

FACILITIES

We are renting a house near the market, which is an ideal place as most of the street children frequent this area. The property has three good-sized rooms, used for sleeping quarters, an office / store, and a big activity room. A temporary outdoor kitchen has been constructed, and there is ample space for further temporary structures on the site. There is no running water, but the facility does have its own well which gives water for longer times during the summer months than other wells in the community. There is no electrical connection.

PROGRAM

The Center is managed by Peter Malek, who is assisted by volunteers from the local church. The program currently operates for three days a week, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m, and serves almost 40 children. When they arrive in the morning, the children are able to shower and wash their clothes. There is a program of activities and games, followed by Bible teaching and prayer, and ending with a meal. We are looking to register around ten of the children in school over the coming year.

FUTURE
Plans for the coming year include the following:

extending the Day Care Program to four or five days per week
developing a Residential Program for up to 12 children
making improvements to the current facility
purchasing new resources, furnishings, clothes and medical supplies as funds allow
