Zambia: Chikondi One Children's Home

ZAMBIA HOME

LOCATION

The Chikondi Children’s Home (Chikondi means love) is located in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Zambia is a land-locked country in southern Africa, just south of Congo and north of Zimbabwe.

HISTORY

The Kids Alive Zambia project began in 1999 with a visit to Zambia by members of the Kids Alive Canada Board of Directors. Kids Alive International was aware of the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis on the children of the country. As a result, a Zambian board of directors was formed in 2000, and in 2001 the Chikondi Children's Home was opened. There are currently thirteen orphans and children at risk who reside at the Chikondi One home, and Jim and Ivy Kongwa serve as the house parents.

FACILITIES

The Chikondi One home is currently in a rented facility and is hoping to move to a new donated land in the same vicinity early in 2009.

PROGRAM

Houseparents, Jimmy and Ivy Kongwa provide loving care for the children. In addition to a safe place to live and nutritious meals, the children receive an education, medical attention, and Christian discipleship.

FUTURE

Kids Alive Zambia plans include expanding this site to multiple houses of 12 children per home. The AIDS crisis will dramatically change countries like Zambia. Those children brought up to know the love of Christ and the discipline of committed parents or house parents will lead the country in the future.
